Module 5

Metaphors are a way to educate and learn, and can aid understanding by linking the unknown with the known. Metaphors make things richer and can increase the scope of imagination. I think the metaphor is not perfect because it can affect one’s judgment to some extent. In learning, when a student doesn’t know enough about a new concept, metaphors already have a definition of the thing beforehand.

What I found was the article “On Three Metaphors for Education”, it says “Education is ‘the conversation of mankind’. ” Below is the collage I made according to it.

I think that comparing education to a dialogue with human beings will modify the traditional definition of education to some extent. In the conventional conception, education is a transfer of knowledge, while dialogue is more like a discussion and exchange of knowledge.

This activity and reading made me more aware of the role of metaphors. Before I thought it was all found in writing, I didn’t think it would be useful in education and in life. Even in financial reports, some metaphors can affect people’s expectations. From the article ” The Magic of Metaphor” the Tedtalk video mentioned that when comparing a rise to an upward climb all the time, people will expect more.
