Module 1 Learning Activity: Theories of Learning

I chose this topic because I wanted to be able to learn in different ways. Because I found that not everyone fits the same way of learning and it is very important to find the right way of learning for you. And this lesson is done with online learning. I would like to know what kind of learning effect the different learning styles have.

One of the learning experiences I can remember was studying biology in elementary school. Because it was an elementary school course, I remember that the main purpose of the course was to get us to know more kinds of insects. I remember my elementary school campus had a small garden with a variety of plants as well as some insects. My biology teacher would assign us tasks in each class, such as which insects we needed to find today, and after we found them we needed to call him over to check them out, and if they were correct then we would be rewarded. At the beginning of each class we would go to the garden to look for insects, and then when the insect search was over, we would return to the class to listen to the teacher explain more about these insects. I think this is a very effective way of education because first of all, the reward and finding the insects by ourselves will make us more motivated to learn, and secondly, because after we find the insects, we will be curious and deeply affected by the insects we find by ourselves, and then we will be more willing to listen to the teacher’s explanation after we return to the classroom. I think this is the constructivist approach to education because the biology teacher lets us experience and make connections.

For the example of personal experiences regarding behaviourist learning. When I was in kindergarten in China, our teacher would give out a sticker every day to the child who did better in some area, and by the end of the week, the top three children who got more stickers would get a special reward.

As for cognitivism, In high school, my English 12 teacher used to have us play Kahoot! games after lectures. The questions in it were all related to what we were learning in class. We could also check ourselves while we were playing. Through the game we found that many points we thought we had mastered were actually not remembered when we answered the questions.

When I was on edci335, all the knowledge information as well as the assignments were done online. We self-learned by watching different videos and documents. We could learn the weekly assignments at our own pace. I like this way more than the face-to-face learning style. Group discussions are also available on the web. This way of learning makes me feel more flexible and efficient. On the other hand, there are times when sitting in class and listening to lectures may be just sitting there but not really grasping all the points. Instead, it is the self-study that makes us feel more engaged and want to explore.
